Women’s History Month

Canada officially recognized Women’s History Month in 1992. October was intentionally chosen to commemorate Persons Day (October 18), marking the historic 1929 legal victory ensuring women were recognized as “persons” under the law.

However, progress is not uniform. True solidarity requires intersectionality. We explicitly honour the unique, diverse struggles and triumphs of Indigenous, Black, Racialized, 2SLGBTQIA+, and sisters living with a disability within our union. Our shared history is built on overlapping experiences that span racial, ability, and class lines.

The Fight for Equity Continues

While we honour past trailblazers, we face pressing modern challenges. Systemic barriers persist in Canadian workplaces. Statistically, Canadian women still face a stark gender wage gap, earning just 88 cents for every dollar a man makes, a penalty that intensifies for marginalized communities. We continue to combat gender-based violence, pay secrecy, and the severe underrepresentation of women in senior leadership.

Take Action This October

Don’t let history just be something you read; be a part of creating it:

  • Support Women-Owned Businesses: Intentionally redirect your purchasing power to local, women-led businesses—including Indigenous and racialized entrepreneurs—across the Southwestern region.
  • Write Letters of Gratitude: Send a thank-you note to a woman who has mentored you, or use journaling prompts to reflect on the activists who came before you.
  • Get Involved: Join us at our upcoming events:
    • In-Person Film Screening & Dinner: October 5, 2026, at the PSAC London Regional Office (Suite 401, 244 Pall Mall Street, London, ON).
    • London Regional Women’s Committee Meeting: October 8, 2026, via Zoom.
    • Women’s History Month Celebration: October 15, 2026, via Zoom. Join us to hear powerful mini keynotes from our women leaders.

Let’s turn recognition into REALITY!

In Solidarity,

PSAC London Regional Women’s Committee
