Reverse Contracting Out at FBCL

On June 15, the Federal Bridge Corporation Limited (FBCL) terminated PSAC Local 501 unionized workers while the work they performed continued under GDI Integrated Facility Services, a private contractor. These workers weren’t replaced because the work disappeared. They were replaced because FBCL chose to contract it out.

Workers who dedicated years of service deserved fairness, transparency, and respect, not to lose their livelihoods while their work continued under another employer.

At a time when families are facing rising costs and economic uncertainty, secure employment has never been more important. When employers contract out bargaining unit work instead of retaining unionized employees, they undermine collective bargaining and weaken the workplace protections workers have fought to secure.

This decision doesn’t just affect the workers who lost their jobs. It sets a troubling precedent for workers, families, and communities by making it easier to replace secure employment through contracting out.

Tell FBCL: Reverse the Contracting Out of Union Work, sign our petition below:

Join PSAC Local 501 in calling on FBCL and local elected officials to:

  • Reverse the decision to contract out this work.
  • Restore the work to the bargaining unit.

Dear CEO Kinloch, MP Gladu, MPP Bailey, Mayor Bradley, and Councillor White,

I am writing in solidarity with the members of PSAC Local 501 to express my concern over the Federal Bridge Corporation Limited’s decision to terminate unionized workers and contract out the work they had been performing.

On June 15, workers who had dedicated years of service to FBCL were terminated while the work they performed continued under GDI Integrated Facility Services, a private contractor. These workers weren’t replaced because the work disappeared. They were replaced because FBCL chose to contract it out. After years of service, workers deserved transparency, meaningful dialogue, and respect, not to lose their livelihoods while their work continued under another employer.

At a time when families across Canada are facing rising costs and economic uncertainty, stable employment has never been more important. Decisions like this don’t just affect the workers who lose their jobs. They affect families, weaken local communities, and make it easier to replace secure employment with contracted work.

Contracting out bargaining unit work undermines collective bargaining and weakens the workplace protections workers have fought to secure. It sends a troubling message that experienced workers can be replaced through contracting out instead of being retained, even when the work they perform continues to exist.

I urge the Federal Bridge Corporation Limited to reverse its decision to contract out this work and restore it to the bargaining unit. I also urge elected representatives to use their influence to encourage meaningful discussions with PSAC Local 501 and support a resolution that reinstates these workers.

Workers deserve fairness, dignity, and respect. I ask you to stand with these workers and help ensure that those who have dedicated years of service are treated fairly.

Sincerely,
