National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is commemorated on September 30th and recognizes the tragic legacy of residential schools, including the missing children, the families left behind and the survivors of these institutions.

The first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation was held in 2021. The day coincides with Orange Shirt Day, which was first honoured in 2013 by the founding non-profit organization, the Orange Shirt Society.

PSAC Ontario stands in solidarity with survivors and their families and acknowledges the memory of those who never returned home.

Reconciliation is the responsibility of each of us. It means acknowledging the past and ensuring history does not repeat itself by respecting the treaties and rights of Indigenous peoples, letting go of stereotypes and working towards solidarity.

We encourage members to engage with this day through reflection, education and advocacy.

We also encourage you to take part in the course, “Walking in Our Truth Together” developed by PSAC in collaboration with Canadian Geographic. This 10-module course explores key issues and perspectives on reconciliation, offering a meaningful way to deepen understanding and how to take steps forward.

In Solidarity,

Michelle Woods, PSAC Ontario Regional Council Indigenous Members Representative
