We condemn, in the strongest possible terms, the racist and violent assault on Malayali immigrant youth that occurred on January 18, 2026, at Victoria Park, in London, ON. Four young people were seriously injured in what community organizations have rightly identified as a hate-motivated attack targeting South Asian newcomers.
This violence did not occur in isolation. It reflects a disturbing rise in anti-immigrant hostility, emboldened far-right activity, and public displays of hate across Southwestern Ontario. These conditions create an environment where even youth, especially racialized newcomers, are made vulnerable simply for existing in public spaces. As union members, we are committed to equity, justice, and the safety of all workers and community members. We refuse to allow this climate of hate to go unchallenged.
The PSAC London Area Council and Southwestern Racialized Committee stand firmly with the Malayali community, the survivors, their families, and all racialized and immigrant communities who continue to face discrimination, harassment, and violence. Their pain is our collective responsibility, and their safety is a matter of public concern.
We urge law enforcement to treat this incident with the seriousness it warrants, including full consideration of hate-motivated elements. Transparent public updates and meaningful accountability are essential to rebuilding and maintaining trust.
There is an urgent need for immediate and ongoing support for survivors. This includes access to medical care, trauma-informed counselling, legal assistance, and financial resources to support recovery.
We also call on community organizations, educational institutions and local partners to support the development of community-led educational programs that address xenophobia, racism, and the growing normalization of extremist rhetoric. Such programs are essential to preventing future harm.
We must all reaffirm our commitment to confronting racism and fascism wherever they appear. We will continue working with community partners, labour allies, and local organizations to ensure that London and the rest of Southwestern Ontario remain places where newcomers and racialized communities can live, work, and gather without fear.
In Solidarity,
PSAC London Area Council & Southwestern Racialized Committee
