World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is observed on June 15th and is meant to raise awareness on the abuse and neglect of older adults.
Elder abuse is a silent epidemic and as our population ages, one that impacts many in our communities. Abuse and neglect can come at the hands of family members, care givers, and in institutions like long term care homes.
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is an opportunity to educate people what to look for and to assist those who may be suffering.
What are some signs of elder abuse?
- changes in mood (depression, fear, anxiety or detachment)
- changes in behaviour (social withdrawal)
- physical harm (unexplained injuries)
- neglect (lack of hygiene, food, clothing)
- failure to meet financial obligations or unusual bank withdrawals
- changes in living arrangements (people moving in or being forced out)
What can you do to help? Be aware of potential signs and see how you can provide support.
