Staff at Chaffeys Lock
On Wednesday August 3rd the staff at Chaffeys Lock were pleasantly surprised when a special visitor made an appearance at their site. The Stanley Cup was brought to the station by the Stanley Cup Champions Boston Bruins assistant coach Doug Jarvis. A resident of the nearby Clear Lake, Doug brought the cup to his friends at Chaffeys for a visit of about 30 minutes. The excitement drew a small crowd of locals and boaters who were eager to get their photo taken with the idol trophy. The Lock staff waited patiently for their turn to get a picture with Lord Stanleys' cup and when the time came Jarvis passed the cup to Lock Master Chris Kenney. It would have been difficult to take the smiles off the faces of the staff as they surrounded Chris for the photo. From Left to right, Katie Roberts, Sam Jaspers-Fayer, Chris Kenney, Cam Moores and Lucas Hudson. Jarvis Himself had a very respectable hockey career as both a coach and as a player, winning 4 stanley cups in a row with the Montreal Canadiens in 1976, '77, '78 and '79. Jarvis also holds the NHL iron man record for most consecutive games played. As an assistant coach Jarvis won cups with the Dallas Stars and now the Boston Bruins, who he joined in 2010 after coaching in Montreal from 2005-2009.

Commissionaires Protest
Directly Chartered Local 818, Kingston Commissionaires, held an information picket on Monday 13 June 2011 to protest the stalling tactics of their employer in negotiating their first collective agreement. Their employer, the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires, won't respond appropriately at the table to simple demands such as having a grievance process and paid sick leave days and talks have reached an impasse.
Military personnel from the Canadian Forces Base and members of the public demonstrated their support to the members of the local who are only asking for the respect they deserve from their bosses at the negotiating table. PSAC Area Council and Kingston District Labour Council representatives stood shoulder to shoulder with the members of Local 818. Other PSAC locals also attended the picket, including members from the Components of UNDE, UCTE, USGE and Directly Chartered Local 901, Queen's University.
Local TV, radio and newspapers captured the Commissionaires protest, and the event was covered on the front page of the local news section of the Whig Standard today, Tuesday 14 June 2011.
