On April 30, 2013, the International Union of Elevator Constructors, Local 96, based in Ottawa, went on strike. The Twitter post reads: “As of now all Local 96 members working for TKE, Schindler, Otis and Kone in Ontario are on strike.” One of the issues is that these companies have brought in replacement workers from outside the province who are not licensed or certified under the Provincial TSSA (Technical Standards and Safety Authority).
A May 4, 2013 Twitter post reads: “Pass this info on to all friends, building owners and managers, you know…. Unqualified “replacement workers”….
One IUEC Local 96 picket line has been present with good numbers near the corner of Sir John A MacDonald Boulevard and John Counter Boulevard adjacent the PSAC Kingston Regional Office since late last week.
Earlier today, PSAC National Vice-President, Chris Aylward spoke with IUEC picketers who had moved their line to Kingston City Hall. Brother Aylward was in Kingston to attend a hospital privatization presentation put on by the Ontario Health Coalition featuring Dr John Lister, international expert on P3 hospital schemes.
In recognition of these workers and, indeed, of all workers rights, and the potential dangers that unqualified replacement workers pose to the general public, the PSAC Kingston RO is supporting IUEC Local 96.
