National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

Every year, on December 6th the PSAC joins in marking the anniversary of the murders of 14 young women in Montreal in 1989.  This day is now known as Canada's National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

This year, the PSAC is supporting the Native Women’s Association (NWAC) and Amnesty International in the “Sisters in Spirit” and “Stolen Sisters” campaigns to raise awareness on the alarming levels of violence against Aboriginal women in Canada.

NWAC states that “a disproportionate number of native women are victims of racialized or sexualized violence because of the colour of their skin and their gender.”

Amnesty reports that “In every instance, Canadian authorities could and should have done more to ensure the safety of these [missing and murdered Aboriginal] women and girls.”

Violence against women can be stopped.  Preventing violence against women is an important step along the way towards achieving women’s equality at all levels of our society.  We know that the economic, social and political marginalization of women, especially of Aboriginal and other racialized women makes women and girls highly vulnerable to violence.

We must speak out.  We must take action.

  • Learn more about violence against women.
  • Sign petitions, postcards and question the candidates during the federal election campaign on their commitment to the eradication of violence.
  • Organize an action or event in your Region, workplace or community.
  • Support a women’s shelter, women’s centre or women’s advocacy organization in your area.
We have the power to effect change.  But we have to raise our voices together and say “Enough”!  Enough missing women, enough murdered women, enough violence.  It must end now.

World AIDS Day

We know that the people and communities most affected by HIV/AIDS are those with limited access to fundamental social and economic rights.  We also know that 95% of all AIDS cases occur in the world’s poorest countries where women have become the prime victims and an incredible number of children are being orphaned every day.

According to UNAIDS estimates, there are 38 million adults and 2.3 million children living with HIV, and in 2005 some 4.9 million people became newly infected with the virus. Around half of all people with HIV became infected before the age of 25 and died of AIDS before the age of 35.

The Public Service Alliance of Canada is appalled at the fact that the richest nations, including our own, continue to abdicate their responsibility to help find a cure for AIDS, and today, on World AIDS Day, we must break the silence.

There are many ways in which you can support World AIDS Day. For example:

  • Find out about the Canadian HIV/AIDS Labour Fund, launched by the Canadian Labour Congress [www.clc-ctc.ca].  It is working closely with unions that actively promote the rights of workers to fair treatment and provide workplace-based information on protection against the disease and on prevention of its spread.
  • Raise awareness of HIV and AIDS in your region, local, and community.
  • Organize a letter-writing campaign.
  • Put up posters or hand out flyers - get people talking.
  • Wear a red ribbon and ask others to do the same.
  • Sell red ribbons.
  • Protect yourself and your partners - this is the first and best way to stop the spread of HIV.
  • If you are worried - get tested.

The PSAC encourages its members and their families to wear the red ribbon on December 1, to help end the silence and lift the veil of ignorance by reading, discussing and learning more about HIV/AIDS, and to take action by putting pressure on our government to do its part.

Getting Away With Murder

OUTPOST VANCOUVER

The attack was so savage that it was difficult to count the number of wounds on the victim’s body. One hundred forty-six, they finally determined. Maybe sheer exhaustion finally stopped the frenzy.

That may sound like something from a far off war or a TV police drama. But it’s one of hundreds of incidents happening to queers in tree lined neighborhoods right across the country.

Ontario's jobless 'pawns' in Martin's desperate quest for majority government

Labour Market Development Agreement ‘price of peace’ with McGuinty as province lacks network to deliver offloaded services

OTTAWA – Ontario’s jobless have become pawns in Paul Martin’s desperate attempt to secure a majority Liberal government in the imminent federal election.  The charge was leveled today by Jeannette Meunier-McKay, National President of the Canada Employment and Immigration Union, as details of last week’s federal-provincial Labour Market Development Agreement became clear.

A Provincial Bi-Election In Scarborough Rouge River

Greetings Sisters & Brothers,

Please read the message from the OFL.  A provincial bi-election in Scarborough Rouge River is underway and the Labour Friendly Candidate needs our help.

In Solidarity,

Gerry Halabecki,
Regional Executive Vice-President, Ontario
Public Service Alliance of Canada

The By-election in Scarborough Rouge River is well under way and our polls show that many people who voted for Alvin Curling in the past are open to voting NDP this time. Our NDP candidate, Sheila White, is running against city councilor Bas Balkassoon for the Libs and real estate agent Cynthia Lai for the Tories. (Click here for info) After our victory in Hamilton East and then our great showing in Dufferin-Peel-Wellington-Grey, we need to keep up the momentum and give the Liberals a run for their money in SRR.

The campaign is organizing a blitz canvass with the candidate this weekend - Saturday starting at noon and Sunday starting at 1:00 pm. Im hoping to get a group from here to come with me for the Saturday canvass and maybe we can make a social event out of it and go for drinks and/or food afterward.

E-day is the Thursday of our convention, so there really are only 2 weekends that we can realistically help out. Please consider giving a few hours of your time on one or both of those two weekends. Let me know if you can make it on Saturday, so they will know how many people to expect. The campaign office is at 4563 Sheppard Ave. East, between Brimley and McCowen. Their phone is 416-754-3222. Sheilas web-site is. Theres a map showing the location of the office there.

Kingston Marches to "Unlock the CBC"

Approximately 100 people gathered in front of the John Deutsch University Centre to listen to the broadcast. This group included Canadian Media Guild (CMG), The Kingston & District Labour Council and representatives of the PSAC. At 1:15, with police escort, this group marched from Queen's University campus to Kingston City Hall amidst chanting of "Unlock the CBC" and "Bring back the CBC". Public support both on the campus and on the street was terrific!

TORONTO - Delegates to the PSAC’s Ontario regional

convention have re-elected Gerry Halabecki as their Regional Executive Vice-President (REVP) for another three-year term.

“It is an honour and a privilege to be able to continue to work with the PSAC members in the Ontario region,” says Halabecki. “Our union is stronger for the work we do, both

Gerry

within the union and within the broader labour movement.”

“When the federal election is called, we will need to play a big part in ensuring that labour issues are on the agenda and that labour-friendly candidates are elected. The labour movement acting together can and will make a difference.”

Halabecki was first elected at PSAC’s triennial national convention in 2000. Delegates to the PSAC’s 2003 convention changed the process to allow for the election of the union’s seven Regional Executive Vice-Presidents at a triennial convention in each region.

As an REVP, Halabecki chairs the PSAC Ontario Region Council and is responsible for activities in the region including the union’s participation in the Ontario Federation of Labour. For the last three years, he was responsible for co-chairing the union’s strategy around bargaining for PSAC’s largest bargaining units, including Treasury Board and a number of Agencies, as well as sharing responsibility for the union’s education program.

Halabecki has been active in the union since 1986, holding a number of positions in the PSAC’s Agriculture Union component. Prior to his election in 2000, he worked for the Canadian Grain Commission in Thunder Bay.

Ken Boone was elected as the alternate Regional Executive Vice-President for Ontario. He would become the REVP in the event that Halabecki could not complete his term of office.

TORONTO - Members of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) in the Ontario region are meeting in Toronto this weekend at their regional convention.
